Final Major, Final Chance

With the PGA Championship this week, it will be the final chance for a lot of big names, and small names, to make their mark on this season and history. Everyone knows names like Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods, but I'm talking about players like Vijay and Ernie and Retief, players who go into a season thinking primarily about the majors and who have not gotten it done this season. A major victory for Ernie this week could turn a bad year into a pretty good one. A major victory could turn a so-so year from Vijay into a successful season. That's what happened to Phil in last year's PGA. He was having a so-so season, and all of a sudden he was the guy who had won two majors in as many years.

But I'm also talking about players like Mike Weir and Kenny Perry, two players who I think would have a good chance at Medinah, but neither has done a lot in the past few years. Perry is coming off knee surgery, and Weir is coming back from being off the grid since, arguably, the 2003 Masters.

Can it be that any of these guys will win, or perhaps it will be the new Best Yet To Win, Sergio. Maybe good memories from '99 will carry him through to victory. We'll just have to wait and see, I guess. One more day. One more day.
