Dvorak Was Right

Once again, it looks like famous curmudgeon and whipping boy of most of the western tech world, John C. Dvorak was right. Digg is being gamed and it's not even big time gaming. It's gaming that doesn't even matter. It's just so some dude in East Philly can go to bed at night knowing he's one of the coveted 'Top 100' on the site. What happens when, as Dvorak mentions, someone with an agenda tries to game the system to get one of their stories promoted to the all important front page? It can be done. The Digg Powers That Be (DPTB) have admitted that they are contstantly having to tweak the secret algorithm that says whether a story is promoted or not.

Kudos to them for doing what they can to keep Digg as democratic as they can, but the fact remains that as long as there is someone out there who wants to use a site or an idea like Digg to their advantage, they will eventually figure out a way to do it. Right now it doesn't really matter. The gaming taking place is apparently all about ego at this point. But some day, it will be about more than that, and that's when the Digg crew will have a real problem on their hands.

Natalie Gublis 'Girls of FHM' Interview

I'll be honest, I don't think Natalie Gulbis is necessarily better looking or sexier than a lot of the girls on the LPGA, but for some reason she has become the Anna Kournikova of golf. I guess at the end of the day it's all marketing hype. Anyway, she does seem to be a nice girl, and I do wish she would get her first win out of the way. Anyone who watches the LPGA at all knows she's got the talent, so in theory it's only a matter of time.

Woods Takes Ryder Cup Leadership Role

Once the U.S. team was set for the Ryder Cup, the running joke was that Brett Wetterich had never met Tiger Woods. By the end of last week, Woods got to know all four rookies quite well. In another sign that Woods is taking on more of a leadership role, he took the quartet of Ryder Cup rookies to dinner Friday night at the Diamond Grill restaurant.

Ratings for PGA Jump With Woods' Win

Tiger Woods' victory at the PGA Championship helped the TV ratings increase 22 percent from last year. CBS' final-round coverage Sunday drew an average overnight household rating of 7.2 with a 16 share. That's up from last year's 5.9 rating with a 13 share for Phil Mickelson's victory.

I honestly don't understand these figures, as I stopped watching once I realized that no one was gonna catch Tiger. And that's not just because it's Tiger in the lead. I have the same reaction to any golf tournament I'm watching where the competition is no longer in question. I guess that's why I have slowly been finding myself watching more LPGA golf lately. It seems no matter who is playing and how small or big time the tournament is, it's always close.
